dc.description.abstract | En 1902, la Encyclopaedia Britannica resumía de forma rotunda la situación de la pintura española de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Consideraba que la pintura moderna en España comenzaba con Mariano Fortuny (1838-1874), quien habría de dejar su marca en las siguientes generaciones de pintores. Y destacaba solamente a un artista durante los años de 1870, Joaquín Agrasot y Juan (1836-1919), quien pintó con gran sinceridad imágenes de la vida española cotidiana. Y, concluía que, ya para finales del siglo, dos jóvenes artistas aparecieron con energía: Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923) e Ignacio Zuloaga (1870-1945). Por tanto, el pintor valenciano Joaquín Agrasot había adquirido una consideración a principios del siglo XX que lo situaba entre los cuatro artistas españoles más importantes.
