A detailed analiysis of a prodigious episode collected in the Vita Commodi of the Historia Augusta in which is narrated the darkening of the Circus during the January calends (SHA. Comm. 16.2), helps us to know the ideological program of legitimation developed during the reign of the Emperor Commodus Antoninus (176-192 AD), as well as the posible popular reflect of itself. This analysis also let us to propose an improved Latin translation of the term caligo with the sense of 'smoke', instead of 'fog', which appears in the majority of the text editions. |
