Possible long-distance effects like eta --> pi-pi and the electric dipole moment of the neutron (nEDM), which may originate in the strong CP-non-conserving sector of QCD, are re-examined in the light of an effective chiral lagrangian approach. Contrary to recent claims, we show that it is possible to obtain reliable estimates for these processes from chiral symmetry and low-energy phenomenology (modulo the size of the theta-vacuum angle, of course). We also discuss how an improvement of the presented estimate of the nEDM could be made, if necessary. |
