dc.description.abstract | Jujutsu, Japanese wrestling, technical predecessor of judo, was introduced in Europe in the period between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th by professional wrestlers, through exhibitions and challenges in theatre stages. The sporting society from Barcelona, at the forefront of progress, welcomed this combat system, admired in Europe and in the United States, which was enveloped with the oriental exoticism and mystery. However, although its great repercussion in Catalonia, it did not succeed as sport, because of its presentation as o spectacle, apart from period gymnasiums and sporting clubs, stopped the creation of structures and groups of practice with significant continutiy in time. | |
