| This essay draws the history of the Catalan word pretopònim (i. e. pre-toponym) and its introduction in the studies on the history of Catalan words and place-names. It also deals with the introduction of this word in the scientific terminology of neighbouring languages (Spanish, French). And, finally, it analyses the use of this word in Coromines’ DECat as a step towards its exact definition. Keywords: Lexicography; Metalexicography; History of Terminology; DECat; GMLC.En este artículo se traza brevemente la historia de la introducción del término pretopónimo en los estudios sobre la historia del léxico catalán y la onomástica catalana. También, de su difusión a la terminología de otras lenguas vecinas.
