dc.description.abstract	This thesis investigates the drama plays related to the theatrical practice of the Society of Jesus in the Spanish Golden Age period based on the lives of the Saints and Blessed of the Order. To do so, we structured our work in six parts. The introduction chapter contextualizes Jesuit drama, linking it with the different theatrical practices that, according to existing scholarship, are related with: medieval religious drama, University theater, courtly theatrical practices and Renaissance religious drama. In the second section, Jesuit academic theater is described with a focus on what we think are its main features, among which we highlight the declining use of Latin in favor of Spanish, its function in propaganda, its complex staging, and the appearance of ludic elements in the plays. After these chapters, which constitute the research framework and theoretical basis of this thesis, we have done a panoramic of the Spanish hagiographical theater, from the late 15th until the 17th century. The purpose of this panoramic is to portray the gestation progress of the ‘comedia de santos’, one of the most representative dramatic genres of the Golden Age period, in an effort to determine possible influences from the genuine hagiographical theater of the Society of Jesus. This is an important aspect of this thesis subject because the vast majority of plays based on the lives of the Saints and the Blessed of the Order, composed in the 17th century, follow this genre. Having done so, in the fourth section, we begin the studies inspired by the following members of the Society of Jesus: Stanislaus Kostka, Aloysius Gonzaga, Ignatius of Loyola, Francis Xavier and Francis Borgia. We did not focus only on those dramatic texts which are still available from the 17th century, but we also dedicated a subsection in each study on plays which have not been preserved, but for which there is some documentary evidence. Our thesis concludes with a section focused on final inferences. Prior to that, we dedicated a chapter to some aspects that emerged as noteworthy offshoots from the conducted research. Such examples include the financing of the Jesuit spectacles or the performance of female roles by the students of the colleges on the stage.	en_US
dc.description.abstract	El propósito de esta tesis es estudiar las obras protagonizadas por los santos y beatos de la Compañía de Jesús durante nuestro Siglo de Oro. Para ellos, hemos articulado nuestro estudio en 6 partes; en el apartado de introducción hemos contextualizado la práctica dramática jesuita relacionándola con las diversas dramaturgias con las que, según la crítica, está relacionado el teatro jesuita: el teatro religioso medieval, el teatro universitario, la práctica escénica cortesana y el teatro religioso del Renacimiento español. En el segundo apartado hemos caracterizado el teatro escolar jesuita hispano centrándonos en lo que consideramos sus principales señas de identidad, de las que podemos destacar en estas breves líneas la combinación del latín y el castellano, su función propagandística, su esmerada puesta en escena y la inclusión de elementos lúdico-cómicos en el texto dramático. Tras estos dos puntos, que podemos considerar como base teórica, hemos realizado una panorámica del teatro hagiográfico desde finales del XV hasta principios del XVII con el propósito de dar cuenta del proceso de gestación de la comedia de santos, género de especial relevancia tanto por su longevidad como por su aceptación entre el público de la época, con el propósito de determinar posibles influencias del teatro hagiográfico genuino de la orden ignaciana en el género a través del que se dramatizaba la santidad en pleno siglo XVII, pues la gran mayoría de obras protagonizadas por los santos y beatos de la Compañía están insertas en dicho género. Hecho esto, hemos abordado las dramaturgias inspiradas por los santos y beatos de la orden: Estanislao Kostka, Luis Gonzaga, Ignacio de Loyola, Francisco Javier y Francisco de Borja. En todos los estudios se ha dedicado también un apartado a estudiar las piezas de las que tenemos constancia pero que, lamentablemente, no han llegado hasta nosotros. Finalizamos nuestra tesis con un breve apartado de conclusiones y, previo a este, incluimos un capítulo que hemos titulado como ‘Disposiciones finales’ en el que se reflexiona acerca de varios aspectos que han surgido en paralelo a nuestra investigación y que consideramos relevante que los lectores de nuestra tesis tengan en cuenta a la hora de conformar una idea de conjunto de la dramaturgia jesuita lo más completa posible, como la financiación de estos espectáculos o la participación de los estudiantes interpretando papeles femeninos en las tablas.	es_ES
