Our paper intends to analyse the sentences which have the quantifiers u (un), 'one', and cada u (cada un), 'everyone', in the Catalan language of the 17th century. This research studies specifically the cases of masculine singular form in external position in detail. The study shows that historically there are morphological alternations between the apocopated form (u) and non-apocopated form (un). But this variation suggests differences in Catalan dialects. Methodologically, the investigation is based on a large corpus of texts from the main Catalan dialects. We describe, classify and quantify the linguistic uses of the quantifiers studied, which reveals that several factors interact in various ways in the evolution of linguistic tendencies, in particular phonological and analogical factors. |
